My Big Blue Eyes Got Me Where I Am Today
by Humphrey Bollenbacher

My name is Humphrey. I live in Colorado. I had to run away because my first family was so mean to me. Out in the wild I tried to make friends with a porcupine and got quills stuck above my right eye. That hurt! Then while I was on the street, the dog catcher nabbed me. Boy, I hated the dog pound. All of the other dogs were so noisy! They barked all of the time. When someone came to look us, they barked even louder. Not me. I'm the quiet sort. I was sad when I lived there. The floors were cold cement and the food was terrible. I hardly ate a thing. I didn't think anyone would take me home because I looked terrible. My coat was all matted and full of burrs from being on the road.

humprhy1.JPG - 4.15 KWhen my owners-to-be came in I decided to be different than the other dogs. I sat quietly in my cage and looked at them with my big blue eyes. I don't have a tail so I couldn't wag, but I hoped they would know I was friendly. The woman liked me right away but the man wasn't sure. I heard the man say, "If we take him home, we'll end up keeping him." I sat up extra straight and kept staring at them and it worked! The door opened, they put me on a leash and got me out of there! I was so happy.

When they got me home, they brushed me for 45 minutes. I have a thick coat and my skin always itches. The next day they brought home a dog book to try and figure out what breed I am. After turning a lot of pages, they finally decided some part of me was a sheep dog.

I love living here. Every day I have so much fun. I get up in the morning, stretch and go outside. In the summer, I chase chipmunks from the deck. I never catch one, but I try hard every day. Then I go down the road to visit my girlfriend, Lady. No one knows what kind of dog she is either. We sure have fun running across the meadow by their house. I chew on her ear so she knows I love her. Lady lives with another dog, Ace and a cat.

humprhy2.JPG - 5.74 K Lady has one bad habit, she chases cars. I try to tell her it's dangerous but she doesn't listen. As soon as she hears a car coming, she hides and crouches down on the side of the road until one comes by. Then she jumps up and chases it. Not very far, but she still runs close to the wheels which scares me. Someday we'd like to get married. My owner showed me a picture in PEOPLE magazine of a place in California that does dog weddings. Lady would be a beautiful bride.

I like the winter best of all because I like to lie in the snow. Then I'm never hot. My owners go snow shoeing a lot and they always take me. I like to stick my nose in the snow and throw lots of white flakes into the air. Sometimes when the snow is wet it sticks to my fur in big clumps.

I sure am happy to be off the streets. I'm the luckiest dog I know.
