If you are a home aquarium hobbyist or if you are planning to become one, you have some of the world's best resources right
in front of you – yes, on the Internet! Here are some useful sites on the Net with all the information you need to take care of
your aquarium, or to set up a new one.
The only thing you need to do is check the links, gather the information and return to your fish. Just make sure you don't end
up ignoring your finned friends, as the Internet can be very addictive ...
FINS – Fish Information Service
This is the site of Aquaria FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions), the most complete and accurate source of fish information
for the home aquarium on the World Wide Web. Here you will find answers to everything: how to start, choosing your fish,
fish heeding, filtration, calculations, etc. Also, look for articles on disease treatment instructions, pictures, software, a
glossary and an extensive list of local aquarium clubs and sources worldwide. Highly recommended!
The Krib
If you are interested in fresh water aquariums and tropical fish, this site is for you. The Krib claims to be the oldest living
aquarium Web site (it started on January 1994), with more than 25 MB of information.
FAQ's throughout the site give beginners better insight on tank setup, algae and other issues. Don't forget to check for the
specialized mailing lists so you can meet people who share your same interests.
The Saltwater Aquarium Guide
This is the site to visit if you need information on saltwater aquariums. It contains more than 200 photos of fish and
invertebrates, plus tips on aquarium setup, maintenance, heating, water filtration, etc. This site also includes tips on disease
treatment, a variety of quizzes and puzzles, as well as a message board for aquarium comments.
The Amazing Fish Cam
The Continuously Refreshing Fish Cam
These two URL's at Netscape offer Web cameras showing aquarium images. Interesting to look at; no need to tell you that
they will only work with Navigator.
Piranha.org
The piranha is a carnivorous fish found only in South American rivers. It is extremely dangerous, as their powerful teeth can
eat an ox or a man fairly easily. This site will teach you something about the biology of piranhas and how to set up a piranha
aquarium.
Beware: raising piranhas as a pet is forbidden in various US states, and local laws in South American countries (Brazil
included) also forbid the export and selling of wild animals (piranhas included). The setup information contained in this site
may be of interest for raising other freshwater species.
All Aquatic Plants
This site contains a guide to growing aquatic plants, with all steps to raise plants in your tank: light color and intensity, tank
setup, water conditions, algae and the like. Plant photos are also included.
KIS a Fish
KIS – Keep It Simple – a Fish contains a collection of specific articles and advice for home aquarium beginners. Its
purpose is to make things simple, to allow the hobbyist to "spend more time watching the aquarium instead of taking care of
it." Quick tips and information on tropical fish and specific species are also included.
Ocean Pro Aquarium & Co. Ltd.
Here you can find free fish software for download, from Java applets and screen savers to an aquatic calculator. Test your
fish knowledge with the General Knowledge Quiz and visit the chat room, articles, classified ads, message board, photo
gallery and links.
Geothermal Aquaculture Research Foundation
Check this site to learn how to set up a reef aquarium and how to solve your reef aquarium algae problems. The
Foundation's Newsletter and the various pages of this site offer advice on base rock, species for a reef aquarium, natural
algae control, coral and mushrooms, all with pictures and full details.
Marine Aquarium Society of Los Angeles
The Society's Newsletter, available on the site, offers lots of articles for novice and experienced aquarium hobbyists. You
can also meet other hobbyists in the site's chat room and check tips for beginners and coral farmers. Lastly, you can look at
links to other sites, which run the gamut from public aquariums to sites on mermaids! How about having one of those in
YOUR home aquarium?
