Horsing Around on the Net
Host
Sandra L. Toney
If you love horses, you certainly are not alone. Horses
have been part of the human existence practically since the beginnings
of time. Whether these majestic creatures are used for working the fields,
racing at the track, or for pure riding enjoyment, they are (and always
will be) respected and revered by all who have witnessed their amazing
spirit and grace.
There are so many sites on the Internet for and about horses and their
owners and admirers; below are a few of the more interesting ones I've
discovered: American Miniature Horse
Association Official Site
Everyone loves a "little" animal and many of us wish our beloved pets
would stay that way forever. If you own a miniature horse, however,
you can have the best of both worlds. An adult, mature horse that is,
well, forever little.
The American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA)
page proudly calls itself "your complete information source for all
aspects of owning, showing, breeding, training (and even buying!) a
Miniature Horse." The only thing little about this site is the size
of the horses.
The AMHA site is otherwise huge. With over 250 pages of information,
including pages on driving and performance, youth pages, contests, classifieds,
forms for joining the association, and much more, the AMHA Official
Site will keep you busy for quite some time.
Churchill Downs
Homepage
If you know absolutely nothing about horses or horse racing, you'll
no doubt recognize the name, the Kentucky Derby, as one of the most
prominent horse races in the world. What you may not know, however,
is where this famous race takes place -- at a track called Churchill
Downs.
The Churchill Downs Homepage offers a lot of information about horse
racing, especially the Kentucky Derby, and is the next best thing to
being at the track in person. Besides all the race times and dates,
post times and betting menus, and the latest news in racing, you can
actually listen to live racing broadcasts at the site (provided you
have the correct equipment installed on your computer).
The Horse Interactive
Just as there is "must-see" t.v., there are also "must-see" websites.
The Horse Interactive is definitely one of those "must-see" sites! Everything
you need (and want) to know about horses can be found here. This site
is actually a part of the magazine, The Horse: Your Guide to Equine
Health Care.
You'll get to read features from the print version of the magazine.
You'll also get information on the latest in horse news, convention
reports, nutrition, sports medicine, and a section called the Knowledge
Bank.
At the Knowledge Bank, you will find a glossary of equine health information
in alphabetical order. Whether you are wondering about how a saddle
should properly fit a horse or the latest developments in worming your
horse, the Knowledge Bank will have the answers you are looking for
-- from A to Z -- and everything in between.
International Museum
of the Horse
For a creature that has catered to and labored for the human race
for centuries, it is highly appropriate, then, that we pay tribute to
this majestic animal by creating a museum for it.
At their site, The International Museum of the Horse has this as their
credo: "Our history was written on his back. We are his heirs. But he
is his own heritage, the horse." Truer words have never been spoken.
One visit to this online museum will introduce you to such engaging
exhibits as The Presidents and Their Horses, The Texas Cowboys, The
Horse in Fine Art, and many others.
Also, an upcoming exhibit that the museum is highly anticipating --
Horse Breeds of the World, which will replace their 20-year-old exhibit,
Breed Wall computer exhibit. Be sure to stop by the International Museum
of the Horse often. Horses, together with the Arts, is an unbeatable
combination.
Young Rider On-line
Not for kids only, Young Rider On-line will give kids of any age a
fun adventure and an educational experience about the sport and hobby
of horseback riding. As part of Young Rider Magazine, a publication
put out by Fancy Publications, who also publishes animal magazines such
as Cat Fancy, Dog Fancy and others, this site is a section of the Fancy
Publication overall site, the Animal Network.
At this online site, young riders can share their experiences in sections
called My Pony, Pony Poetry, and Young Artists. Puzzles and fun contests
round out the balance of this playful and productive website.
Any of the above-mentioned sites also are filled with links to more
horse-related pages from around the world. So, even if you don't have
a real horse to ride, you can spend hours horsing around on the net
. . . and never have to worry about getting thrown off!
