Fun Sites For Rainy Days And Other Boring Times
By
Suzanne Lieurance
"Gee, Mom, I'm bored." If you're a kid, you've probably voiced that complaint at one time or
another, and maybe your mom has tried to figure out what to do about it.
But whether it's raining, snowing, 60 degrees below zero outside, or you've just flipped through
every channel on TV only to find there's nothing on – relax! These days there's no reason to be
bored if you have a computer and access to the Internet.
As a mom myself, I've found plenty of interesting places online that are fun and safe for kids.
Ready to visit some of these sites with me? Let's go.....
The Exploratorium
First, if you have ever been curious about how things work (and who hasn't?), you'll love this
great museum. The Exploratorium is an actual museum in San Francisco, California, but this online
version has enough interactive exhibits (over 650, in fact) to keep you coming back for months.
Build a Glitter Globe. Perform a cow's eye dissection, make a Roto-Copter, or even a camera (from
a potato chip can). You'll find step-by-step instructions for these, and many other projects, in
The Learning Studio at the museum.
The White House For Kids
Take a trip to Washington, D.C. without even leaving your house. Join Socks and Buddy (the First
Family's pets) for a tour of The White House.
You'll learn all about the history of The White House, including the kids and pets who've lived
there over the years. When you've finished your tour, you can even send an email letter to
President Clinton, Mrs. Clinton, the Vice-President or Mrs. Gore.
International Kids' Space
Come to the International Kids' Space to meet other kids from around the world. Readers from over
125 countries visit this site, where kids can share their own stories, work on stories together,
or even attend an on-air concert with music played by other kids.
The Yuckiest Site on the Internet
Did you know there's even a place online for yucky stuff? Cool, huh? Just go to the Yuckiest Site
on the Internet and find out about burps, snores, icky roaches, and lots more. While you're there
you'll meet Mary, the worm woman, and learn all sorts of, well...yucky stuff.
MaMaMedia
MaMaMedia has even more fun, safe activities you'll want to try. Tell Mom MaMaMedia screens the
sites in its databases, making sure they're the best and most age-appropriate for kids.
Enter contests and sweepstakes here, too, but Mom doesn't need to worry. Your parents will
receive an email message notifying them each time you enter. Don't forget to drop by the
MaMaMedia Bookstore for some great reads before you go.
Kids' Clubhouse
At the Kids' Clubhouse you can create your own wacky stories, word searches and word puzzles.
Test your math skills with weekly brain teasers and make up your own creative definitions for
words when you play Fake Out!
Magic Kingdom Online
If you spend your days dreaming about a trip to Disneyland or DisneyWorld, visit the Magic Kingdom
online where you can chat with your favorite Disney characters (Jimney Cricket was chatting with
kids when I was there).
At this site you'll find links to all sorts of Disney-related activities - games, stories, crafts,
magazines, even some online movies (but you'll need special plug-in applications for these, so you
might ask Mom or Dad for some help here).
ZooNet
Find out about your favorite wild animals at ZooNet - "the place to go when you want to know about
zoos." You'll find links to zoos around the world, extensive galleries of all sorts of wild
animal photos, and interesting facts about endangered species.
CyberPet
Get answers to anything you've ever wondered about cats or dogs at CyberPet, where Karl K9 and
Felicia Feline will be your guides. If your family is thinking about adopting a new pet, you
might want to read some of the articles about how to select a pet that is just right for you.
There are also several databases where you can search for information about various breeds of dogs
and cats.
Children's Express
Read news about kids, written by kids at Children's Express. All sorts of articles by kids from
around the world are at this site. Read what they have to say about fast food (and whether it can
be part of a healthy diet), safety on the Internet, and even some information about what to do
when kids have trouble sleeping.
Well, that's the tour for today. Just remember, next time you feel like saying, "Mom, I'm Bored,"
turn on your computer and have loads of fun instead!
