Cruisin' for Cool Cats

Host
Alicia Drnek

Hi everyone. My name is Alicia and I'm a confirmed ailurophile (cat lover). Currently, I share my home with six feline companions and one bunny. However, that number is always changing, depending on the number of strays I have waiting for a good home. Growing up, I was strictly a dog person, but now I have come to agree with Jean Cocteau, a French poet, who said, "I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul." Listed below, I offer you a variety of cat sources on the Internet. Enjoy!

These first few sites are devoted to providing information on many of the various aspects of our feline friends including health, behavior, and a few more obscure topics. "Nobody who is not prepared to spoil cats will get from them the reward they are able to give to those who do spoil them." - Sir Compton MacKenzie, English writer.

Animal Connection

What a great site for animal enthusiasts. Ever wonder if pets communicate telepathically? Ever had a desire to know what your pet is thinking? At Animal Connection, you'll get your answer. Dr. Doolittle couldn't offer more information.

You'll find books, videos, and a list of professional communicators throughout the country. There is also extensive information on holistic health care, workshops for grief support, and software for tracking your cat's health. Plan to spend awhile here to see all that the site offers.

When you're finished at Animal Connection, check out one of the many links they offer to other cat pages.

From the Cat's Point of View

I've always been fascinated by animal behavior and this site covers all the basics. Here you'll find a book by Gwen Bohnenkamp, behavior specialist at Perfect Paws Training in California. She offers essential and easy to understand information on aggression, selecting a companion, memory, is my cat happy, basic training, eating plants, scratching, biting, and playing. Unfortunately, there are no pictures; but not to worry, I've got that covered in a later site review.

Feline Information Page

Just as the title says, the site has loads of feline information, from the history and evolution of the cat, to understanding feline genetics and the basics of nutrition. And if you're interested, Cats Around the Globe offers translations of the word 'cat' in several different languages. This is also a good starting point as it offers many, many, many links.

And here are your pictures, as promised. "Who can believe that there is no soul behind those luminous eyes." - Theophile Gautier, French writer

LAL Cat Archive

We got pictures, and more pictures; and links, and more links, but mostly pictures. You can look at thumbnail images for downloading or the full size picture of wild and domestic cats. This site should surely fill your desire to see other cats. Don't miss the Snow Leopard, it's beautiful.

Whether you're an old pro at having companion cats or just starting out with your first feline, these next few sites should prove very enlightening.

"For every house is incompleat without him, and a blessing is lacking in the spirit."
-Christopher Smart

Getting a Cat

Thinking of adding a feline to the household. Read the information offered here first. It has topics such as Should You, What Kind, Where, General Care, Health Care, Problem Behavior, and miscellaneous info. This site really lets you know what you're getting in to, and what wonderful things to anticipate.

Cat Breed Descriptions

If you're considering a pure breed, this site, from the Cat Fanciers Association, will give you descriptions, photos, and breeders profiles for dozens of fancy breeds. It's a very thorough site, you're sure to find what you're looking for. Ever heard of a Somali? Look at a picture of one and tell me if you don't think they're a magnificent animal.

Save-a-Pet OnLine

For those of you who prefer to adopt a needy feline, here you can find a list of shelters from all across the country. There's also a list of specific breed rescues and all-breed rescues with instructions to apply for a pet on-line. Yes, I know the URL address says 'Dog', but trust me on this one, have a let you down yet?

Here are a few pages provided for entertainment, enlightenment, and just plain nonsense. "In a cat's eye, all things belong to cats." - English proverb

The Scratching Post

This is an eclectic site mixing amusement with a more serious side of having a companion cat, and even a little Internet info. See if you don't agree with the "Bad Kitty List" containing punishments for felines to write 500 times on the blackboard, or "Bad Human List" for the human to remember about his/her 'Master'. There is also "Rules for Cats to Follow" and the poem "Rats to Cats", plus "Essential Cat Rules" for cats who have a house and humans to manage. You'll also find basic and advanced medical care information, a cat's prayer, and a touching poem called, "A Friend's Farewell." Grief support can be found in the topics A Sad Day, and Rainbow Bridge. You can even enter pet chat rooms. There's a whole lot more at this site so don't rush through it.

Do Black Cats Cause Bad Luck

Since I have a black cat, this one is a personal favorite. A short site for someone with limited time; here is an essay on the superstitions behind the black cat.

Foo Foo's Cat Astrology

Just for fun, this site will get you laughing. Are you and your cat compatible? There's a chart that will let you know. You can also find a description for each zodiac sign and the personality of the cat who falls under it. For the more advanced astrologers, there is a topic called, "Bodily Correspondence" which I have yet to understand, but I'm trying.

Also, I can't forget to mention my own site, Tugger's Tidbits where you can meet my family, read various cat information, and join Tugger's Spay/Neuter Campaign.
