Do you wish you could send flowers to someone, but can't
afford to? Do you remember birthdays at the last
minute when there's not enough time to send a card?
Not to worry. Gifts and greetings are no farther away than
your computer--and they're free! You can send virtual
flowers, greeting cards, postcards, even furniture and
pets to anyone who has e-mail. The recipient will love
you for it.
Here's how it works: Go to a website that provides
this service and follow the instructions. You can
select from a variety of designs and messages. The
person to whom you send the virtual greeting will
receive instructions via e-mail about how to retrieve
your remembrance and bring it onto his or her computer
screen.
This is a perfect pick for newbies because it's straightforward and easy to maneuver. Here you'll find nine pictures of beautiful flower arrangements. Click on your favorite, then type a personal message. Bonus: Icons lead you to information on "Rose Care," "A Guy's Guide to Giving," and "Meanings of Flowers." You can also send special occasion postcards from this site and select from a menu of greetings.
A menu of 15 special occasion cards, including "New Baby," presents a colorful array of easy-to-send greetings.
If you have friends in foreign countries, this one's for you. Greetings come in 13 languages, including Suomi and Nihongo. Customize your layout by choosing from a menu that includes original art, ranging from flowers and animals to USAF Thunderbirds, with a variety of background colors to choose from. (Artists' biographies are available.) You can also select music to accompany your postcard, and import a photo from the URL of your choice. Bonus: This site tells you the current server load, so you know up front if it's going to be slow or speedy.
When my son told me he needed a new bed, I sent him an entire bedroom suite from this website. There's an extensive array of categories, from food and jewelry to cars and pets (such as rhino and buffalo), with dozens of choices in each group. How about sending someone some tools, clothing, or even an airplane? You'll have as much fun with this as the recipient.
If corny cartoons make you giggle, you'll hang around this place a long time. The menu consists of 16 categories of toonograms, from animals, people and family, to business, health, and mishaps. Example: One 'toon depicts an airline stewardess handing out diapers as she announces that the toilets are out of order. The card is titled: "How to tell if you're on a really bad airline."
Yes, even the king of greetings has jumped onto the internet. Soft pastel images create a warm, romantic mood for this homepage. Be prepared for a variety of icons leading you to advertisements, history of the company, even employment opportunities. I scrolled down to Hallmark Connections and clicked on Free Electronic Greetings, which gave me a choice of sending postcards or animated cards.
Cards about upcoming holidays appear on the screen first, followed by categories such as Happy Birthday, Friends, Family. My favorite: Love. Heart-fluttering cards with lovey dovey pictures and romantic poems are animated and musical. Choose the hugging polar bears, or a bird flapping its wings. A bottom-of-the-page "special interest" menu includes wolves, Native Americans, and endangered species, among others.
Garfield lovers everywhere will appreciate one of these cards. Just click on your choice, add your personal message and send.
You'll find a selection of Looney Tunes cards here, including old time favorites such as Sylvester and Tweety. If you can't get to sleep some night, check out Warner Bros. "Insomniacs Asylum." The images are small but you can enlarge any of the four "weird" pictures for a better view. You can even designate a URL to appear as a hot link on the WeB Card. Have fun with this one!
Do you know people who are stressed, tired, and long overdue for a vacation? Send them a virtual sailing trip, take them to a Hawaiian Island, or give them a walk in the forest.
